Take It Off Before It Costs You His Presence

Take it off before it costs you His Presence.

There are some things that God is asking you to lay down, and it is not because you are a bad person. But because His Presence will not dwell where those things remain. Some of us are still battling with removing what God already told us to remove. And let us never forget. God is never confused. We are. And the longer we delay, the heavier the spiritual consequence.

This reminder came to me during a recent Bible study where God told the Israelites, in Exodus 33:5 (NIV),

“You are a stiff-necked people. If I were to go with you even for a moment, I might destroy you. Now take off your ornaments and I will decide what to do with you.”

God was not speaking to outsiders. He was speaking to His chosen people. The backstory behind all of this is that while Moses was on the mountain receiving the Ten Commandments from God, the Israelites grew impatient. They convinced Aaron, the Priest, to collect their gold jewellery and ornaments. With it, they made a golden calf and began worshipping it.

God needed to make it very clear. His holiness would not dwell in the midst of rebellion. His Presence could not go where idolatry remained. And that truth has not changed.

So, in the same way that I felt challenged, let me ask you: What is God asking you to take off?

Here is a list of some things we need to take off. Just let the Holy Spirit speak to you as you read each of these.

List of things that need to fall away

1. Sexual Temptation

It is the kind that shows up in your DMs when you are lonely. That temptation that looks like love on the surface but pulls you further from God. The thing you have not told anyone about, but you know it is there.

“It is God’s will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality.” — 1 Thessalonians 4:3

2. The Need to Control Everything

You pray but still panic. You say God is in charge, but your peace disappears the moment you do not have the outcome in your hands.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.” — Proverbs 3:5 (NIV)

3. The Constant Desire for More

You say you are content, but your heart keeps chasing the next thing. More money. More visibility. More affirmation. And even when you get it, it still does not feel like enough.

“Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have.” — Hebrews 13:5 (NIV)

4. Bitterness That You Keep Justifying

Yes, they hurt you. And no, it was not fair. But holding on to the pain is not healing you; it is hardening you.

“Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger… Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” — Ephesians 4:31-32 (NIV)

5. Pride That Blocks Repentance

You always have a reason. There is always defence. But maybe this time, God is asking you to stop explaining and start surrendering.

“God opposes the proud but shows favour to the humble.” — James 4:6 (NIV)

6. Toxic Connections You Refuse to Let Go

You know that relationship is not bearing fruit. You know that friendship keeps pulling you backwards. But you are afraid to let go, even when God already told you to.

“Do not be misled: ‘Bad company corrupts good character.’” — 1 Corinthians 15:33 (NIV)

7. Unforgiveness That Feels Justified

You think holding on is protecting you, but what if it is actually holding you hostage?

“For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.” — Matthew 6:14 (NIV)

8. Secret Sin You Keep Silencing

Nobody knows because you keep it buried deep. But the truth is, God already sees it, and He loves you enough to convict you.

“Whoever conceals their sins does not prosper, but the one who confesses and renounces them finds mercy.” — Proverbs 28:13 (NIV)

9. Performing Instead of Pursuing

You show up, you serve, you say the right words. But underneath the routine is a soul that feels far from God. You know how to look spiritual, but your heart is tired, dry, and disconnected.

“These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.” — Matthew 15:8 (NIV)

10. Approval Addiction That Drowns Obedience

You know what God told you to do, but you keep shrinking back because of what people will think. You second-guess your assignment because you are afraid to disappoint others.

“Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people?” — Galatians 1:10 (NIV)

Holding on to what God already told you to release is not just burdensome, but also costly. It will cloud your clarity and dull your intimacy with Him. And if you are not careful, it will keep you from His Presence.

There are things that you cannot take with you into this next season. We need to take it off now. Before it costs us everything.

Let us not be a generation that keeps grieving the One who is fighting for us. Let us live in a way that honours Jesus, not just with our words, but with our obedience.

Let us pray

Holy God. Amazing Abba Father. You are the Great I AM. Our help in times of trouble. Our Justice. Our Savior. Our Defender. Our Peace that surpasses all understanding. Father, may my life be a sweet aroma to You. Yahweh, fill us with Your presence and peace. We honour and praise who You are.

Lord, I lay it all down and surrender to You. At Your feet is where I want to be, longing to be in Your presence.

You already see it all, El Roi. You see our pride, our fear, and our desires. Lord, we confess that there are things we are still wearing that You already told us to remove. Father, forgive me. Forgive me for holding on to what You never designed for me. Lord, I do not want to grieve You. I do not want to miss You. I do not want Your presence, Lord, to be closed off from me.

Reveal the strongholds that are binding us up. So many of us are experiencing pain and suffering because of our own choices. The things we desired have become curses. We are crying out to You, God, asking You to help and save us. But all we have to do is lay it all down and not pick it back up again.

Yahweh, help me to remove anything and anyone that does not reflect You. I trust You and surrender. With total abandon, God, I am letting it all go. Not just in this moment, but also in the way that I will live. Not my will, but Your will be done.

My life is in Your faithful and kind hands. Father, for the things that I will miss, please fill me with more of You, so that I never even realise that it is gone. Please give me peace, joy, and so much favour.

Lord, for everyone praying this prayer, show them Your glory. Show them what obedience to You brings into their lives. Blow their minds, God.

In the matchless and wonderful name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.
