What Happens When We Don’t Seek God’s Guidance

As I was studying God’s Word, something struck me that I had to map out in this format for you all: what happens when we don’t seek God’s guidance.

Seeking God – Godlywoman911.com

It all started with Egypt. Egypt is a name that comes up again and again in the Bible. For many, it symbolises oppression, hardship, and even sin. But after reflecting on Egypt I realized a hard truth: it provides lessons about obedience, redemption, and God’s divine plans.

Let me take you on this journey with me.

Abraham’s Egypt Moment

There was a famine in the land, and Abraham chose to go to Egypt to survive (Genesis 12:10). But Egypt wasn’t just a place of refuge—it became a place of testing. While there, Pharaoh took Sarah, Abraham’s wife, into his palace to be his wife. To protect His covenant promise, God sent plagues on Pharaoh and his household (Genesis 12:17).

Doesn’t this sound familiar? Abraham went to Egypt without seeking God’s direction, and trouble followed. Egypt became more than a physical location—it represented what happens when we rely on human plans instead of God’s will.

Abraham’s Descendants Made the Same Mistake

Now let’s fast forward several generations, and Abraham’s descendants faced their own famine. Under Joseph’s leadership, they found relief in Egypt (Genesis 46:6). But what was supposed to be temporary turned into generations of slavery and suffering.

Isn’t that what happens to us sometimes? We turn to something or someone during a hard season—a relationship, a career, or even an idol—and instead of temporary relief, it becomes a permanent prison. Egypt reminds us that not every solution is from God, even if it seems good at first.

But God Redeems Egypt

Here’s the part that left me in awe: Egypt wasn’t always bad. When Herod sought to kill baby Jesus, God instructed Joseph and Mary to flee to Egypt for safety (Matthew 2:13-15).

Do you see the shift? Egypt, a place of oppression, became a place of divine refuge because Joseph obeyed God. They didn’t stay longer than God intended. They left when God said it was time.

The lesson? Even a place of pain can become a place of redemption when God is in control.

What Is Your Egypt?

As I write this to you, I hear God asking each of us: What is your Egypt? What person, place, or thing are you running to in your famine? What are you holding onto that God is asking you to release? Are you staying too long in something God never intended to be permanent?

Jesus broke the oppressive image of Egypt. Through Him, every “Egypt” in our life can be redeemed. But like Mary and Joseph, we have to listen to God and obey His timing.

Final Thoughts and Prayer

Egypt reminds me that God’s plans are always better than mine. He’s faithful to rescue us when we’re stuck, just as He delivered the Israelites. And through Jesus, He shows us that even the hardest places can serve His purpose if we trust Him. Are you willing to let Him guide you today?

***

Holy God, we magnify and exalt You. Forgive us for not trusting You enough to surrender to Your plans. Even though You have never failed us, God, we still don’t believe. Help our unbelief. Reign and take over our lives. Your will and no longer ours. Amen 🙏🏾
