The Perfect Gentleman

The perfect gentleman.

I was travelling the other day on a very long transatlantic flight (which for some reason I can never sleep on) and had an experience that made me pause… enough to have me write about it.

As I was getting up to get my coat and bags in the overhead baggage, the gentleman sitting next to me got up and asked “Can I help you put on your coat?”

Ok! I have had men in the past request to take down my bags for me… but never to put on my coat! I had to take a quick look to see if he was speaking to me… And yes, I tried to play it off like I was use to this kind of thing all the time… and accepted his offer.

Of course I can put on my own coat… But boy did it feel good!

He was an older and stately looking gentleman, but it got me thinking… Are we teaching our boys and young men to do things like this anymore?

The Word

The bible speaks quite a lot about the way a husband should treat a wife and vice versa… or how we should treat each other as human beings. But as I reflected on the Bible and sought to understand how we should train our boys into men these verses as spoken by Paul came to mind:

“Therefore I, the prisoner of the Lord, implore you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling with which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, showing tolerance for one another in love… As a result, we are no longer to be children, tossed here and there by waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, by craftiness in deceitful scheming;  but speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all aspects into Him who is the head… Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. Be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ also has forgiven you.” Ephesians 4:1-2, 14-15, 31-32

Reflection

Previously I wrote about the type of men every single Christian woman should look for…

Ladies, I am just saying… I have now added to my list, the gent who offers to put on my coat!

Food for thought: What are you teaching the young men in your life or in your community?

Prayer: Holy Father, hear our cry for the men of this world. May they be leaders like King David who was a man after your own heart. May they rise like Moses, a man of humility and integrity. To be courageous and wise like Daniel. To be servant leaders like Jesus who showed us how to love everyone. In Jesus name. Amen

May God’s love, peace and mercy be with you.
