Master Control

Master Control

Master Control. You can do this Cas. Speed up. Don’t look! “Ohhh but it looks so good,” I say to myself as I look through the display window.

And then the words of my Professor filters into my thoughts,

If you don’t discipline your discipline, your discipline will discipline you.

Professor Don Jacob

Wow! A true buzz kill. Go ahead, reread it. The first time Professor Don Jacob, a 9th degree black belt quoted this in my karate class, it took me a few minutes to truly digest the power of the statement.

I love desserts. And even though there is absolutely nothing wrong with that, I also dislike exercise. And my friend, the good Lord has blessed me with a body that tells me when my love for dessert and lack of exercise has gone far enough! 🙂

Even though I dislike exercise, I exercise 3-4 times per week, crying and rolling my eyes without failure before each. But I pull up my big girl pants and just get it done.

I remember years ago being upset with God and asking Him, why He structured my body the way that He did. Years later, I felt as if I had the answer. God loves me so much that He blessed me with a body that tells me it needs a workout. If I were a size 0, I would not feel that exercise is necessary and live a life in which I honoured God’s temple.

Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.

1 Corinthians 6:19-20

Putting it into practice

Eating healthy is just one example of mastering control. A lack of self-discipline sometimes causes us to look for the easiest route. This may lead to cheating or being dishonest. I know, that word discipline is not one of our favourites but I have learnt so much freedom and joy when putting it into practice.

Mastering control and practising discipline:

  1. Have focused bible study times and talk to God daily. This will allow us to grow closer to Christ.
  2. Refuse to put harmful things in and on our bodies. This will result in a more healthy and vibrant life.
  3. Be discerning about the friends to keep and guard our hearts against negative influences in our environments will lead to a life of joy.
  4. Practice silence. Instead of participating in gossip, walk away. This will bring so much peace in life.
  5. Simplify our lives by being content with what we have. Less is so much more.

Prayer: Precious Father, glory be to your name. You are the master control, creator of all things. Thank you for life, health, and your never-ending mercies. Guide me in the discipline of discipline. May it be to your glory. Amen
