The most Humble person

Last week I wrote about gentleness and quietness of spirit. This week let us look at another character that is pleasing to God.

“(Now Moses was a very humble man, more humble than anyone else on the face of the earth.)” Numbers 12:3

Outside of Jesus who humbled himself to come on earth to die for our sins, the only recorded person who God labeled as “humble” was Moses.

What an honor.

Humbleness is not a character that comes easily to many people. What makes it even worse is that we live in a world that is driven to push messages telling you that you have to be successful, you have to be wealthy, you should be at the top of the ladder and not the bottom etc.

My brother, is one of the most humble men I know. He is a man of quiet resolution, thoughtful insights and a passion to always be continually learning. Observing his traits and others, here are the 4 key things that makes one humble:

#1: No pride.

We know that God hates pride:

“To fear the Lord is to hate evil; I hate pride and arrogance, evil behavior and perverse speech.” Proverbs 8:13

The pride that God is referring to is not the one where you love your family and you feel good when they do something very well; it is the haughtiness and build up of hate or dislike for doing something that you feel is below your level. Get rid of all pride.

#2: Love all.

“Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.” Ephesians 4:2

People who are humble are very appreciative of all things and all people. They do not care about your color, nationality, appearance or profession. Learn to love others for their differences.

#3: Serve others.

“Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.” Philippians 2:3-4

We are not here on this earth to be selfish and to pursue our own interests. We are called as believers to serve and give to others. Volunteer at your local soup kitchen, serve in a committee or small group at your church, identify areas of need in your community and start a small group to fix the issue. The bottom line is that humility encourages you to want to serve others above your own needs.

#4: Have a childlike faith.

“He called a little child to him, and placed the child among them. And he said: “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.” Matthew 18:2-3

We serve the one true living God. HE is our Father who we should have all the trust, reverence and faith in to do what HE feels is best. When we put things in to our own hands we tell HIM that we don’t trust HIM enough. We show HIM disrespect. So act like a child who when they look up to their Father, they do so with reverence, faith and complete trust.

I know some of you come from homes where you didn’t have that kind of relationship with your father. But this Father, our God, is one in which you can put your full trust, reverence and faith in. HE will never disappoint you.

Food for thought: Moses had the direct ear of God and was the only one in the Bible who spoke to him face to face as a friend (Exodus 33:11). All because of his humbleness. I don’t know about you but I would love to have that kind of relationship with my God.

Prayer: Compassionate Father, forgive us. Cleanse and purify our hearts. Humble us Lord and don’t turn your face from us we pray. May we be more like Moses and serve within your Kingdom according to your will.
