What does it mean to be a child of God?
Ephesians 1 tells us that we were predestined to be a child of God before the creation of this world!
The God that we serve is a mighty planner and even though HE knew we were going to sin and fall short of HIS glory he still planned it that we would be called sons and daughters of the most High God.
I don’t know about you but that makes me rejoice!
Every time I hear the first “child of God” it makes me feel a sense of awe… there is a part of you that is like… ‘huh… why me?’
Then there is that feeling of apprehension and dread… makes me kind of understand better the life of a Pastor’s kid. You don’t want to do anything wrong, but the devil is working overtime!
Last night, someone innocently asked me, “How do I know if I am a child of God?”
And at first I wanted to come up with something very theological and full of importance, but after two seconds I gave up on that because that ain’t just me… I get to the truth and get to it really quickly!
I responded, “If you accepted Christ as your Lord and Savior then you are a child of God”. It truly is that simple.
But thank my Lord for Google… I wanted to back it up some more and found these verses that I hope you find comfort in as well:
“Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God—” John 1:12
“For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.” The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.” Romans 8:14-17
“he predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will— to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves.” Ephesians 1:5-6
“This is how we know who the children of God are and who the children of the devil are: Anyone who does not do what is right is not God’s child, nor is anyone who does not love their brother and sister.” 1 John 3:10
Food for thought: Are you a child of God? If you are not, Romans 10:9 states that “If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” Call out to God today.
Prayer: Holy God, King of Kings and Lord of Lords. How great is your name above all the earth. How great is your love Father, that we should be called your children. Forgive us for our sins. Forgive us for disowning you. Forgive us when we don’t carry your name well by the way that we live our lives. Amen
May God’s grace, mercy and peace be with you. Shalom
