How should a Godly woman dress?
“While he was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, arrived. With him was a large crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests and the elders of the people. Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: “The one I kiss is the man; arrest him.” Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, “Greetings, Rabbi!” and kissed him.
Jesus replied, “Do what you came for, friend.”
Then the men stepped forward, seized Jesus and arrested him.” Matthew 26:47-50
You might be wondering what this has to do with how should a godly woman dress. Many of us know this story and usually the main focus is on Judas the betrayer.
But, I want us to look at this from a different perspective.
The Pharisees, priests and scribes of the day could not readily identify Jesus because HE did not stand out! He wore no fancy garments or traditional wear as prescribed by the law or society at that time. HE, as his ministry and act of walking on this earth exemplified, was a humble man who ate, walked, talked and wore the same things as the people around HIM.
Religion today in many churches will tell you how to dress.
But yet we also hear the sayings, “Walk like Jesus”; “Be like Jesus”; “What would Jesus do?”
Using the bible as our guide, as we are all called to do, and looking at Jesus’ example, we should dress as is common within our society (or the area you are visiting).
But, I should also add that how you dress should be in how you answer “Does your heart match your outward appearance?
If you are going to church to truly worship, glorify and honor God then you would go as you are. Why? Because God doesn’t care how you look? He just wants you in HIS presence. That does not mean that you should enter HIS temple with any disregard, but your focus shouldn’t be on what others would think about how you look and dress, whether you are wearing the latest styles or the most expensive outfit.
If you want to dress up and wear your suit and tie then go ahead!
If you want to wear your jeans and t-shirt then go ahead!
Food for thought: The bible tells us to render our hearts and not our garments. We need to be sure that our attitude and humility towards God is more important than our outward appearance. God wants us to come as we are and just glorify and give HIM all the glory and honor. Focus on that and not what the world may think about how you dress.
Prayer: Father, you are Creator and Ruler of all. Glory, honor and praise be to your Holy name. Forgive us our pride. Forgive us when we focus on our outward appearance and not about how we approach your Holy presence, preparing our hearts. May we be loyal to you alone and seek you above all else. In Jesus name. Hmmm!!!, your message seems unclear but the scripture is clear .1st Peter 3:3-4 says “Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight.” And Proverbs 31:30 says “Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.”…. I believe with these scriptures and more, the standard expected of “Believers” especially women is to be properly covered in whatever design of your choice of clothing as this is a natural reflection of your inner beauty. For “unbelievers” and first timers in church, yes, let them come as they are but THEY CAN NOT REMAIN AS THEY ARE IF TRUE TRANSFORMATION FOR JESUS IS TAKING PLACE IN THEIR HEARTS AND MIND BY CONSTANT TRUE FELLOWSHIP WITH GOD.
Thanks for your comment and feedback. I don’t feel that there should be a split between believers and unbelievers. In your argument some may even go further and say well you can split believers between ‘new’ and ‘mature’. As noted in the blog, Jesus didn’t stand out in what he wore to scream out that he was a believer or religious. If he did, then he would have worn garments like the Pharisees. The bible does not split even in the scriptures provided how a believer vs a non believer should dress. And in line with your thoughts I did summarize in my food for thought that the bible clearly says that we should render our hearts and not our garments. Our inward attitude and humility is much greater than our outward appearance. I hope this further clarification helps. God’s peace be with you.
