The D Word… A word that we all dread…
Brush your teeth.
Shower.
Comb your hair.
Eat food.
These are things that you do every day.
And we really do it without thought. It is just something we do every single day. I am sure there are other things you can think of that you do daily.
Well, how many of us would say then that we are disciplined in the act of taking care of ourselves daily by brushing our teeth, showering, combing our hair and eating food? Hmmmm or maybe it is easier for you to say “well it is just a habit”!
But you develop a habit by becoming disciplined in doing a certain routine over and over again. But yet so many of us don’t really like the word disciplined – the D word. Why is that?
For some it may be too regimented of a word whilst for others it may remind them of horrible childhood days. Whatever the thoughts towards the word we all have some form of discipline in our lives.
What discipline though do you show to Christ? Do you pray, read the bible and commune with God daily?
We want to be godly but yet we don’t discipline ourselves. Many of us inherently try to find the easy way out in order to avoid the hardship and struggle, and then don’t understand why it may only last for a short time but doesn’t stick!
The key here is that we have to train ourselves. In the bible, Paul encouraged Timothy saying “Have nothing to do with godless myths and old wives’ tales; rather, train yourself to be godly. For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come. This is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance.” (1 Timothy 4:7-9)
What motivates you to brush your teeth every day? Is it to feel fresh every morning, not to have bad breath or to ensure you don’t lose your teeth early in age? Whatever the reason, there is something that ultimately motivates you to brush your teeth daily.
So what motivates you to want to be a godly person? What motivated you to follow this channel and read this? Is it your desire to have a closer relationship with Christ? To go to heaven? Or is it that nothing else is working in your life so you are seeking answers?
Whatever the reason, you will only become godly when you devote yourself to a life of daily prayer, reading of God’s word and commune with God.
Seek the Holy Spirit guidance in your desire to be godly.
I encourage you to fix your eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of our faith (Hebrews 12:2). Yes, it will be a struggle and maybe cause some hardships in the beginning but your end rewards is far greater than any pain you could suffer.
